What are the benefits of natural duvet fillings?

Firstly, natural materials like organic wool, duck down, duck or goose feather, and camel hair are incredibly breathable. They help regulate your body temperature by wicking away moisture and allowing air to circulate as you sleep. This means you stay warm in winter, cool in summer, and comfortable all year round—no more waking up feeling too hot or clammy.

Natural fillings are also hypoallergenic making them ideal for sensitive skin. Our organic wool, for example, is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould, and bacteria, making it a great choice if you suffer from allergies or asthma.

Another huge plus? Sustainability. Unlike synthetic fibres, which are often petroleum-based, our natural fillings are renewable, biodegradable, and ethically sourced. When you choose a duvet filled with organic wool or natural down, you're making a decision that’s better for the planet—and for your home environment too.

And let’s not forget about longevity. Natural materials tend to be more durable, meaning your duvet will keep its loft and comfort for many years to come.

In short, natural duvet fillings offer a healthier, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic options—and that’s why we stand by them, every night and every season.

How do natural duvets compare to synthetic ones?

In our experience, natural duvets offer a completely different level of comfort compared to synthetic ones—and it all comes down to the materials. At Naturalmat, we focus on using natural fillings like organic wool, goose down, and duck feather, and there are some clear differences that really matter.

Natural duvets are much better at regulating temperature. Unlike synthetic fibres, which can trap heat and moisture, natural materials are breathable and moisture-wicking. This means you stay warm without overheating, and the duvet works with your body to keep you at a comfortable temperature all night long whatever the season.

There’s also a noticeable difference in the feel of natural duvets. Natural fillings tend to drape more gently and mould to your body, creating a snug, cosy sleeping environment. In contrast, synthetic duvets can feel a bit stiff or bulky, and they often lose their loft more quickly over time.

Another big factor for us is sustainability. Synthetic duvets are typically made from plastic-based fibres, which aren’t biodegradable and can shed microplastics. Natural duvets, on the other hand, are made from renewable, biodegradable materials and are much kinder to the planet.

And if you have allergies or sensitive skin, natural duvets are often the better choice. For example, our organic wool is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites—something synthetic fibres usually need chemical treatments to achieve.

All in all, we’d say natural duvets simply offer a more breathable, comfortable, and eco-conscious sleep experience.

Are natural duvets suitable for allergy sufferers?

Absolutely—natural duvets can be a fantastic choice for allergy sufferers, and it's one of the reasons we recommend them so often. At Naturalmat, we use carefully selected natural materials like organic wool, goose down, duck feather  and organic cotton, which are not only breathable and comfortable but also naturally hypoallergenic.

Our organic wool, in particular, is a real hero when it comes to allergies. It’s naturally resistant to dust mites, mildew, and mould—three of the most common triggers for allergies and asthma. Wool also helps to ensure that the moisture our bodies lose during sleep doesn’t get trapped inside your duvet, which means your bedding stays comfortable and less hospitable to allergens. And because it’s not treated with harsh chemicals, it’s much gentler on sensitive skin.

Many synthetic duvets rely on chemical treatments to achieve similar levels of allergen resistance, but we prefer a natural approach. Our duvets are made without any synthetic additives or fire retardants, which can often be irritating for people with skin sensitivities or respiratory conditions.

If you have allergies, especially to synthetic materials or dust mites, a natural duvet can make a real difference in your sleep quality. Better breathability, fewer chemicals, and less dust—all things that contribute to a healthier sleep environment.

And to give you even more peace of mind, our duvets are made with certified organic and ethically sourced materials, so you’re not only choosing comfort and protection, but also something that's better for the planet.

How should I care for and clean a natural duvet?

Taking care of a natural duvet is easier than you might think, and with the right care, it can last for many years. We always say the key is to treat it gently—natural materials like wool, feather, and down don’t need harsh cleaning to stay fresh and comfortable.

The first thing we recommend is regular airing. Every so often, give your duvet a good shake and hang it outside on a dry, breezy day. This helps refresh the fibres and maintain its loft without the need for frequent washing. Sunlight is great for naturally disinfecting and removing any lingering moisture or stale air.

When it comes to washing, always check the label. Some of our duvets—especially those filled with organic wool—aren’t machine washable and should be spot cleaned or professionally laundered if needed. Using a duvet cover is essential, as it protects your duvet from daily wear and dirt, making cleaning less frequent and easier overall.

Never tumble dry or use high heat on a natural duvet, as this can damage the fibres. If you do need to wash it, choose a gentle detergent, cold water, and make sure it's dried thoroughly before using again.

With just a little attention, your natural duvet will stay beautifully fresh and cosy for years to come.

Are natural duvets environmentally friendly?

Yes, natural duvets are absolutely more environmentally friendly than synthetic alternatives—and that’s one of the main reasons we’re so passionate about them. When we think about the difference between natural bedding and synthetic alternatives, it really comes down to the materials and the way they’re sourced and disposed of.

Our natural duvets are filled with renewable, biodegradable fibres like organic wool and responsibly sourced goose and duck feather and down. These materials come from nature, and when they reach the end of their life, they return to it without leaving behind harmful microplastics or toxic waste—unlike synthetic duvets, which are usually made from petroleum-based fibres that can take centuries to break down.

We also go to great lengths to ensure our materials are sourced responsibly. For example, our wool is certified organic and comes from local Southwest farms that follow high standards of animal welfare and land management. We avoid harsh chemicals at every stage of production and favour processes that have a lighter impact on the planet.

It’s not just the fillings, either. The fibres, like cotton, hemp and linen we use for our natural duvet covers are certified organic too, meaning they’re grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which is better for both the environment and the people who grow them.

So when you choose a natural duvet, you're not only investing in better sleep—you're also making a conscious choice to reduce your environmental footprint. And to us, that’s just as important as comfort.

What is the difference between feather and down?

Feather and down are both natural fillings commonly used in bedding, but they serve different purposes and offer distinct comfort levels. Understanding the difference helps you choose the best option for your sleep needs.

Feathers come from the outer layer of birds, such as ducks and geese. They have a flat structure with a quill running down the middle, offering firmer support. Duck feather is widely used in pillows and mattress toppers because it provides good structure and bounce. Feathers tend to be heavier and less insulating compared to down.

Down, on the other hand, is the soft, fluffy layer found underneath the feathers, primarily on the chest of the bird. Goose down is particularly prized for its superior softness, loft, and insulating properties. It traps heat efficiently while remaining incredibly lightweight. This makes it ideal for duvets and luxury bedding where warmth without weight is a priority.

In summary, duck feather fillings provide firmer support and are typically more affordable, while goose down offers unmatched softness and thermal performance. Some bedding combines both goose down and duck feather to balance comfort, warmth, and support.

Natural Duvets

Our natural duvet collection features some of the very best bedding for you to snuggle into, designed to provide the perfect blend of warmth, comfort, and breathability for a restful night’s sleep.

Our wonderfully soft and fluffy feather duvets contain a clever combination of down and feather, allowing air circulation and trapping heat when you need it and releasing it when you don’t. Both the goose down and duck feather duvets are available in two different tog ratings for warmer nights or winter chills.

As well as our feather options, we have come up with another way of using our locally sourced organic wool – by making them into our very own, handmade organic wool duvets. The organic wool duvets are something very special, as they offer natural insulation and breathability with a much lower profile, taking up less space.

All our organic and natural duvets are handmade at the same workshop as our mattresses and beds. They are completely chemical free, diamond-shaped quilted and come in different weights, with cotton ties around the edges – for when the temperature really plummets you can simply tie them together…which is guaranteed to keep you toasty!
